GOODIE MOB REUNION TOUR - INCLUDING SCARFACE. Goodie Mob will be touring for the first time in ten years, with all original members: Cee-Lo (from Gnarls Barkley), Big Gipp, Khujo, and T-Mo. The tour will kick off on October 15 in New Orleans and features Scarface as the very special guest on all dates. Goodie Mob will offer a sneak peak of what fans can expect from the reunion when they perform live at the BET Awards taping in Atlanta on October 10 (the show is scheduled to air on 10/27). Tour highlights include a stop at The Cypress Hill SmokeOut on October 23 at the San Manuel Amphitheatre and festival grounds in San Bernardino, CA, and the blowout NYC show on November 13 at the Hammerstein Ballroom on which Goodie Mob and Scarface will be joined by Tech N9ne and Slaughterhouse (Joe Budden, Crooked I, Joell Ortiz, Royce da 59). Universally recognized as pioneering and critically acclaimed, Goodie Mob along with fellow Dungeon Family group OutKast introduced southern rap to mainstream America, helped put Atlanta on the map as a Mecca for hip-hop, and is credited with having invented the runaway term dirty south. The group was met with an overwhelming response when it recently hit fans in hometown Atlanta with a surprise show. The reunion was inevitable, said Cee-Lo. The void in todays music and marketplace ironically has become the very place prepared for us. Theres a need and a want for what we do and represent as The Mob. Consider the tour a mission an order if you will. The last of a living breed, the Goodie Mob marches on. HAMMER TIME AND CASH4GOLD TEAM UP TO ASSIST DISASTER VICTIMS. "We're proud to join our friend and three-time Grammy Award-winner MC Hammer in helping the victims of these recent tragedies," said Cash4Gold CEO Jeff Aronson. "We are honored to back Feed The Children, and we congratulate Hammer for doing so much to bring much-needed attention to their worthy efforts. As the head of a company that is currently expanding internationally, I see this as the first step in making sure our charitable efforts also extend around the globe." LEGENDARY DISK JOCKEY "MR. Before performing the song at the VMAs last month, Keys told Mtv how the collaboration for the Blueprint 3 track came about. "Working together on 'Empire State of Mind' was incredible," Keys said. "I've admired Jay-Z for a long time. Reasonable Doubt is my all-time favorite album, period, and he's been on the scene for long time. I always figured that we would do some type of collaboration, and finally, it came together with this. He reached out to me said, 'I have this big New York record. I feel its right for us to do it together. It has this big Frank Sinatra, take-it-there feeling. I feel like you could really do something with it.' "I went by the studio, took a listen to it," she continued. "I really felt the energy of New York all through it. It felt classic, it felt so good; the piano obviously was in there. I said, 'I love it, so let's do it.' We communicated a lot during the process. I think we both are really happy with how it came out." Keys said that though "Empire State of Mind" was inspired by her hometown, it resonates with all people which explains why the song is currently #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. UNIVERSITY OFFERS SCHOLARLY RESEARCH OF TUPAC SHAKUR. The Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation and Afeni Shakur-Davis, mother of platinum recording artist, actor and poet, Tupac Shakur, will partner with the Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center to make available for scholarly research Shakur's manuscript writings and other papers. More than a decade after his death on September 13, 1996, Shakur remains one of the most influential writers and performers in the hip hop/rap genre and continues to be the top-selling hip hop recording artist of all time, having sold more than 75 million albums worldwide. A prolific writer, Tupac wrote The Rose That Grew From Concrete, when he was only 19 years old. The book contains numerous poems in Tupac's own handwriting and has enjoyed a substantial amount of success selling over 250,000 copies. Select poems from the book will now be included in the collection. There are three more books - Tupac Resurrection, Tupac Legacy and Tupac Remembered which were all published following his death. Tupac Shakur Collection, now housed within the Woodruff Library's Archives & Special Collections Department, features Shakur's handwritten lyrics and track listings, personal notes, video and film concepts, fan correspondence, promotional materials and other items providing a unique insight into his career and creative genius. "The Woodruff Library Archives has done a phenomenal job archiving my son's materials," said Afeni Shakur-Davis. "I thank their staff for partnering with my family and the Foundation in helping to make these important documents available in a professional manner that will benefit scholars for years to come." Currently, Library staff are re-housing the collection's 11 boxes of material into archival boxes and folders, and preparing a finding aid listing the categories and order of items included. A digital (online) finding aid will be prepared to further enhance scholarly access. The Tupac Shakur Collection is expected to be open for research in Fall 2010. "The Woodruff Library is honored to collaborate with the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation to preserve the artistic legacy of Tupac Shakur," said Loretta Parham, CEO & Library Director. "Mr. Shakur was a multi-dimensional artist who helped define a musical genre, and as the academic library serving four institutions of higher learning, it is our mission, as well as a great privilege, to help promote scholarship and research of his work, and the mechanics of his creative process and the hip hop culture." The Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center (AUC) serves the collective research and information needs of Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College and Spelman College. The Library's Archives & Special Collections is the repository for historical materials documenting the AUC institutions, as well as manuscript collections and organizational records, including the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection and the Maynard Jackson Mayoral Administrative Records. In addition to the archival partnership with the Woodruff Library, the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation has recruited some of the nation's top scholars to assemble the Tupac Shakur Secondary School Curriculum, a seventh-12th grade academic curriculum and a college-level reader. In this comprehensive curriculum, the poetry, music and views of Tupac Shakur are used to teach basic hip hop studies units within academic disciplines such as fine arts, history and language arts. This learning tool can be used separately or in conjunction with any state-mandated learning standards curriculum. Both the release of the secondary and college-level curriculums will coincide with the opening for research of The Tupac Shakur Collection at the Woodruff Library in Fall 2010. GRANDMASTER ROC RAIDA: (Accurate Information Straight from his Wife about the Funeral and Other Details) Anthony "Grand Master Roc Raida" Williams was born in Harlem, New York on May 17th, 1972. He passed away on Saturday, September 19th, 2009 from a cardiac arrest resulting from injuries he suffered in an accident while training in Krav Maga, a type self defense system that he had been studying weekly for the last two years. He was proud that his 15-year-old daughter, Asia, shared his passion for Krav Maga and was the only girl in their class. Anthony Williams was both African-American and Puerto Rican. He lived most of his life in Harlem but after marrying his soul mate, Tyeasha on June 26, 1997, they moved to the Bronx. Several years ago, they realized their dream of owning a home and relocated their family to Maryland. He encouraged and shared in his wife's dream of one day opening up her own beauty salon. He began DJing at the age of 12, spinning at local parties around Harlem. In 1991, he won the AS 1 DJ Battle. By 1995, Roc Raida represented the United States at the DMC World DJ Championships and won! He was the first DJ from NYC to hold this title and was automatically inducted into the DMC/Technics DJ Hall of Fame. Throughout his life, he lived his passion - being a professional Hip Hop DJ. He was blessed to tour the world as his day job. Williams was honored to have worked with artists including Showbiz & AG, Lord Finesse, Kool G Rap and most recently, he toured exclusively with Busta Rhymes. Although his family called him "Ant" (short for Anthony), he became known worldwide as legendary DJ Roc Raida. In 1999, Grand Master status was bestowed upon him by a group of pioneering Hip Hop DJs, during a conference at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & Museum. Before he passed, he asked his 10 yr. old daughter, Nyra, who was the most interested, of his children, in DJing to take over for him as a DJ. She agreed - so look out for Nyra! With a very aggressive swagger on the turntables, those who knew Roc Raida were floored by his humbleness. His wife, Tyeasha said, "His notoriety amazed him every day!" He never took that for granted. Williams was also known to be very quiet, private and easy going. His self-control was admirable but if pushed to his limit - he would roar. In fact, Lord Finesse called his friend "the quiet lion" for this very reason. Those closest to him also have the pleasure of remembering him as a hilarious comedian who loved to joke and laugh. Through battles, performances, recordings, documentaries, videos, dvds and even a Pepsi commercial, Roc Raida influenced thousands of DJs, both to partyrock as well as to battle. He took several aspiring DJs under his wing to mentor them personally. As a member of legendary turntablist crews, The X-Men and later, The X-ecutioners, he along with his brothers-in-vinyl took the world by storm, innovating, influencing and inspiring at every turn. In 2006, to progress and contribute to the Hip Hop DJ battle scene, he founded Roc Raida's Gong DJ Battle, a national DJ battle that occurs annually, combining head to head turntablist dexterity with comedy and drama. Not only was he a World Champion DJ, he was a dedicated father and husband as well as a loyal friend. Rest in Peace Roc Raida we are really going to miss you! Funeral Arrangements
and Viewing will take place on Thursday, September 24, 2009 "As one of the Godfathers of Hip Hop, it is a tremendous loss to the Dj community. It's sometimes rare to meet an individual who was a supertalent, but was so mild mannered and so calm. His skill level was admired worldwide. It was pleasure to see him in action. It was a pleasure to know him. I give my condolences to his family." - Grandmaster Flash "My heart is in pain over the passing of a good friend. He's like a brother to me because he holds the same values I hold when it comes to my family, friends, music and life. He will be missed but not forgotten. I will keep his wife and children in my prayers. Rest in Peace Grand Master Roc Raida!" - GrandWizzard Theodore "Roc Raida was an innovator on the turntables at a time when we thought the best of the best had been seen. His artistic wizardry seemed so effortless it reminded me of a young GrandWizzard Theodore. His easy going attitude was a pleasure to see in a time where most artists of his caliber were big headed. Salute young general and RIP to our latest Grand Master!" - GrandMaster Caz "The Lord is forming his band right now. He called home Michael Jackson. But he was missing a DJ that could match the skill level as Michael. So he called upon Grandmaster Roc Raida." - DJ Scratch "Since the day I met Raida, he was the most humble, strong willed, genuine, ultimate competitor. The greatest DJ in my book." - Lord Finesse "Grand Master Roc Raida was one of the greatest DJs to ever touch a turntable. To guys like myself and Craze who came up right after the monumental generation of X-Men, ISP and Beat Junkies, Raida was the ultimate inspiration as a battle DJ. For those who knew him personally, Raida was also the kindest, more generous and funniest friend we had. He was like a mentor to me, I can't even count the amount of times he helped me out over the years. I feel like I just lost a big brother. He will be sorely missed." - DJ A-Trak LIL BOOSIE PLEADS GUILTY- GETS 2 YRS. He was sentenced to two years in jail, but depending on his behavior he may only have to spend one year behind bars. Im just ready to get all of this behind me and get further along in my career, he told the station. I plead guilty, it was in my best interest. As previously reported Boosie, born Torrence Hatch, was arrested in Baton Rogue on October 22, 2008 after authorities smelled marijuana coming from his car. Upon searching his vehicle, they found a firearm along with a bag of marijuana. KRS ONE TO HOST RED BULL BC ONE. Beyonce, who has previously been the face of Tommy Hilfiger's True Star range of perfumes and Emporio Armani's Diamonds, said, "For me, fragrance reflects a woman's attitude and unique sense of style. "While I love various perfumes, I haven't found a scent that truly personifies me as a woman. Working with Coty, I was able to turn my ideal fragrance into a reality by creating an alluring and sophisticated fragrance; one that's reflective of my inner power." But news of Beyonce's big money deal has prompted Abercrombie & Fitch to take legal action over fears her Sasha Fierce perfume will cause confusion among shoppers with their own-branded Fierce fragrance. Company executives filed a federal lawsuit in Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday in a bid to block Beyonce and Coty releasing their scent with the word 'fierce' in its name. The legal papers state the singer's fragrance plan "poses a likelihood of confusion" for consumers and could cost Abercrombie & Fitch in sales. They argue Fierce is the fashion brand's "signature" scent and is regularly sprayed around its retail stores so that "all garments that leave the store have the Fierce scent attached to them". Abercrombie & Fitch has grossed more than $190 million in profits from the Fierce fragrance since 2002 and expects to pull in $64 million in sales this year alone. WARNER MUSIC GROUP - SHARES ARE UP. Reuters reports that shares of Warner Music Group rose 11 percent after Citigroup upgraded the world's third-largest music company on valuation, fueling further speculation of a deal with rival EMI Group. The brokerage raised the stock two notches to "buy," given the company's ability to generate significant free cash flow coupled with the potential to cut costs if a tie-up occurs between the company and EMI. EMI has been the subject of merger speculation with Warner Music as the two look to close the gap on their larger rivals Universal Music Group and Sony Corp's Sony Music Entertainment. Warner Music could probably find about $230 million in cost savings by combining recorded music operations, analyst Jason Bazinet said, raising his price target on the stock to $6.00 from $2.50. Warner Music's capital raise earlier this year lowers covenant pressure, favoring the "much vaunted tie-up" with London-based EMI, which was bought by private equity firm Terra Firma in 2007, Bazinet said. Since the deal close, Terra Firma has been injecting cash into the firm to prevent EMI from violating debt covenants. "Without some financial flexibility on the part of the banks, Terra Firma may be forced to sell its recorded and publishing business to other players in the industry," he said. While EMI's results have improved, the magnitude of the improvement is not robust enough to prevent it from needing more capital to avoid covenant breaches, the analyst added. Shares of Warner Music were trading up nearly 6 percent at $4.79 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange. THE BET HIP-HOP AWARDS '09 NOMINEES ARE IN. TUNE IN NOW!! INTERSCOPE RECORDS- BREAKING RECORDS. With Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the trade magazine's latest issue, Interscope Records notched 23 consecutive weeks at the top spot, breaking a record held since 1978. With the new issue (September 12), Interscope Records continues to set a new record by remaining at #1 for now 24 straight weeks. Interscope surpassed the previous label record of 21 consecutive weeks held by RSO Records, which began at the end of 1977 and included singles from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack album (Bee Gees with "How Deep Is Your Love," "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever" plus Yvonne Elliman's "If I Can't Have You"), "Baby Come Back" by Player and "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water" from Andy Gibb. The new streak is thanks to Lady GaGa's "Pokerface" which hit #1 for one week followed by two Black Eyed Peas' songs--"Boom Boom Pow" which ranked #1 for 12 weeks and now "I Gotta Feeling" for 10 weeks, both from the group's album The E.N.D. In April, "Boom Boom Pow" became the three-time Grammy winning, multiplatinum-selling Peas' first song to reach #1. The 12-week mark also tied the record held by "Lose Yourself" from Eminem (another Interscope artist) as the longest running Rap/Hip-hop song atop the Hot 100 chart. "Having talented artists with giant hits always helps, and Lady Gaga and The Peas make it look easy...that plus the exceptional dedication of our hard working promotion staff helped to make this historic accomplishment for our label possible," said Brenda Romano, President, Promotion, Interscope Geffen A&M Records. Meanwhile "I Gotta Feeling" debuted at #2 (the group's highest chart debut) and gave the Peas' the distinction of being one of only 11 artists who have held the #1 and #2 spots simultaneously. When "I Gotta Feeling" took over the top spot in July, the Peas became only the fourth group in the chart's history to replace itself at #1, following The Beatles, Boyz II Men, and OutKast. Along the way, the Peas have broken the consecutive weeks at #1 records held by Boyz II Men for a duo or group and by Usher for any artist. NIKE TEAMS UP WITH BIRDMAN AMONG OTHERS. Billboard reports that Jay-Z the Jigga man is on course to net his 11th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 next week, as "The Blueprint 3" should cruise to the top of the chart. It's tough to predict how many copies the Roc Nation set will sell in its first week, but chart prognosticators have suggested a bow of anywhere between 350,000 and 500,000. "The Blueprint 3" was originally scheduled to drop on Sept. 11 in order to mark the eighth anniversary of the first "Blueprint" release. However, its physical release was shifted to Sept. 8, likely as a response to the set's leak to the Web on Aug. 31. The digital version of the album is exclusive to Rhapsody through Sept. 11, after which all digital providers will start selling the set. Most of the marketing and promotion of "The Blueprint 3" had been aimed at the Sept. 11 date and this weekend. Therefore, it's difficult to properly project what first week sales will be without knowing how the forthcoming weekend will shake out. If Jay-Z indeed debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 next week, it will be the rapper's 11th chart-topper, pushing him ahead of Elvis Presley as the solo artist with the most No. 1 albums. Among all acts, only the Beatles, with 19 chart-toppers, have more. SHAQUILLE ONEAL PARTNERS WITH POWERHOUSE PRODUCER JEFF CLANAGAN TO PRODUCE THE ALL-STAR COMEDY JAM SERIES. AMARU ENTERTAINMENT SCORES MAJOR VICTORY AGAINST MORGAN CREEK PRODUCTIONS - Tupac's Estate Seeks Millions in Damages for Interference. Lawyers for Amaru Entertainment scored a major victory against Morgan Creek Productions in the Superior Court for the State of California on Tuesday, September 1, when Judge Richard E. Rico ruled in their favor and upheld Amaru Entertainment's cross-complaint for tortious intentional interference. A trial date has now been set for Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Skip Miller of Miller Barondess, LLP in Los Angeles, attorney for Amaru Entertainment, said "We are pleased with the court's ruling yesterday morning. It supports our claim that Morgan Creek tortiously interfered with the making of the Tupac Shakur movie. I look forward to trying this case and have the jury decide the matter. Morgan Creek has a history of bullying people into giving them rights they did not acquire. This time, they picked on the wrong people." The litigation started when Morgan Creek filed suit against Amaru Entertainment in February this year, alleging that the company had "backed out of negotiations" and was currently "refusing to honor and perform a contract of a production for a film based on the life of Tupac Shakur." In actuality, there was never any agreement as key deal terms had never been agreed upon between the parties. This was a scheme by Morgan Creek to bully Amaru Entertainment into doing a movie with them and interfere with Amaru Entertainment's negotiations for the film with other studios. In the ruling yesterday, the court held that Amaru adequately stated a claim against Morgan Creek for interference by making "intentional misrepresentations of fact to third-party studios claiming to own the film rights and threatening them to back off on further negotiations with Amaru Entertainment." This week the new owners of Vibe magazine said that they had chosen Jermaine Hall as the editor in chief of Vibe. Mr. Hall has previously served as the editor in chief of King magazine, a monthly title geared towards African-American men which ceased publication earlier this year. He was also music editor at the rap music magazine The Source and the webmaster at Vibe. Brett Wright, the co-chief executive of the Vibe Lifestyle Network, described Mr. Hall as a very good writer and a well-connected journalist. Mr. Wright said that going forward, Vibe, the print magazine would focus on investigative reporting and long form stories. Overall, Mr. Wright said he wanted the Vibe brand to continue to serve the hip-hop generation while it expanded its music coverage to include more R&B, reggae, dancehall and pop, as well as other things it had gotten away from in the arenas of entertainment, fashion and sports. The first issue of the new quarterly Vibe magazine is planned for a November release. The long-running publication shut down in June when its previous owners said they could not find new buyers or restructure the companys debt. At that time, the magazines founder, Quincy Jones, said that he was seeking to buy it back. Instead, Vibe was purchased earlier this month by a group led by InterMedia Partners, a private equity fund. Regarding Mr. Joness involvement in this latest incarnation of Vibe, Mr. Wright said, We havent spoken to Quincy. Im sure at some point well speak and figure it out from there. Source: NY Times BUMP J ACCEPTS PLEA DEAL. Chicago rapper Bump J has accepted a plea deal that carries a minimum seven year sentence. In the plea deal signed June 26, Bump J admitted his guilt in the Jan. 4, 2007 robbery of the Chase Bank, 800 Madison St., which netted $108,135. He also admitted threatening bank employees with a gun. Under federal sentencing guidelines, Bump J, 28, faced between 37 and 46 months in prison for the bank robbery itself, but life in prison for menacing bank employees with a .45 caliber handgun. He will be required to serve a mandatory minimum seven years on the charge of brandishing a gun during a crime of violence. He's scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Charles R. Norgle on Sept. 1. Police say Bump J and another man entered the bank the morning of Jan. 4, 2007, announced a robbery and took the money from a vault. Boykin was arrested in November 2008 without incident after a routine traffic stop by downstate Carbondale police. C-MURDER GETS 10 MORE YRS ADDED TO SENTENCE? Eleven days after he was ordered to spend the rest of his life in prison for a Jefferson Parish murder, rapper Corey "C-Murder" Miller was sentenced this morning in connection with two unrelated attempted murders in a Baton Rouge nightclub. Miller, 38, received the 10-year sentence from Judge Tony Marabella of the 19th Judicial District as part of a plea deal the rapper agreed to on May 27, when he pleaded no contest to two counts of attempted second-degree murder. Attorneys said Miller also gets credit for the time he has been jailed awaiting trial and under house arrest since his arrest for the Aug. 14, 2001, incident at Club Raggs. The amount of time Miller must serve on the sentence has not been calculated."He probably served the vast majority of his time already," Assistant Attorney General David Caldwell, who prosecuted the case with Butch Wilson, said after the sentence. "I don't like it," but he's entitled to be credited the incarceration time he has served already. Miller's attorney Steve Moore said Marabella retroactively revoked Miller's bond in the Baton Rogue case, "which means (the state Department of Corrections) has to assume he has been in jail until now" in calculating the sentence. Sporting a freshly shaved head, Miller appeared before Marabella shortly after 10 a.m. "Is there anything you'd like to say before I pronounce the sentence?" Marabella asked Miller, who was dressed in orange prison clothing and was restrained with handcuffs and ankle shackles. "No, your honor," Miller replied. The incident was caught on Club Raggs' video surveillance system, showing Miller, wearing a New Orleans' Saints jersey bearing the number 03, arguing with the bouncer after refusing to be searched before entering. As he left the club's front door, Miller is seen pointing a pistol. Authorities said Miller tried to shoot the two people, but the semiautomatic pistol jammed. He tried to clear the jammed weapon and ejected a bullet that investigators recovered but since lost, prosecutors in the Baton Rouge case said. Prosecutors said they feared that the lost evidence and claims made by the Club Raggs' owner Norman Sparrow in a related civil lawsuit, hindered their chance of getting a jury to convict Miller in the aged criminal case. In the civil case, also filed in the 19th Judicial District, Sparrow claimed that Miller's actions were a publicity stunt. Miller was convicted Aug. 11 of second-degree murder in the Jan. 12, 2002, death of Steve Thomas, 16, who was shot in the chest while being beaten by a group of men in the now-closed Platinum Club in Harvey. Judge Hans Liljeberg of the 24th Judicial District Court, sentenced Miller to a mandatory life sentence in prison on Aug. 14. Miller was immediately transferred to the custody of the state Department of Corrections after the sentencing in Gretna. Miller, who lived in Baton Rouge in 2001, was free on bond in the Club Raggs case when Thomas was shot in Harvey. The Jefferson Parish jury voted 10-2 to convict Miller of killing Thomas. Miller, who says he is innocent of that crime, is appealing. Source: New Orleans Crime and Courts JAY-Z LINKS UP WITH ABSOLUT VODKA. Audiences will be given a privileged and private look at the singer, dancer, filmmaker, architect, and genius as he creates and perfects his final show. "I have never been partners with a more creative, innovative or groundbreaking entertainer than Michael Jackson," said Randy Phillips, President & CEO, AEG LIVE and producer of Michael Jackson THIS IS IT. "While the concerts would have been the greatest shows in the history of music, our film will provide a historic event for Michael's fans to see for themselves the genius that he was and the creativity, talent and imagination that the entire cast devoted to create the 'greatest concert that never happened'." Reports are surfacing that EMI Music Publishing and music impresario Antonio "L.A." Reid are expected to announce a joint venture aimed at inking new songwriters to publishing deals. EMI and Reid will each own 50 percent of L.A. Reid Music Publishing Co., as the new entity will be called. Both partners will be making what a source described as a "substantial investment" in the new company to cover overhead costs, deal advances and other start-up expenses. The New York Post says the venture will only focus on music publishing and will not include recorded music. In addition, Reid will continue to serve as chairman of Universal Music Group's Island Def Jam, signing acts to record deals on that label. Already, there is significant overlap between EMI and Reid. Singers Pink, Usher, and Rihanna are among many acts signed by Reid to recording contracts at other labels who also have publishing deals with EMI. Having separate recording and publishing deals is a common practice in the industry. "We do a lot of business with L.A.," said EMI Music Publishing CEO Roger Faxon. "It was a natural thing for us to have a conversation." This isn't the first time Reid has set up a publishing company outside of Universal, either. He previously had a joint venture with Windswept Music dubbed Hitco Publishing Group that signed Beyoncé and other hip-hop and rhythm-and-blues songwriters. EMI Music Publishing ranks as the industry's largest, with more than 1.3 million copyrights to its credit. THE BLACK EYED PEAS MAKE HISTORY. "From the moment I met will, I knew his unique artistry would make lasting impressions." "With this kind of success your ego wants to take all the credit but your heart reminds your soul that it was your heart that had you slaving and creating in the studio making the music; breaking through comfort zones and tradition. WRITER WHO EXPOSED RICK ROSS SHOT AND KILLED. Multiple gunshot wounds killed a North Miami-Dade man found dead after his car crashed on Florida's Turnpike, the Broward Medical Examiner's Office said Monday. The man was a well-known figure in South Florida's hip-hop scene who had survived previous shootings. Ferguson was recently named head of Miami operations for the New York-based glossy Don Diva Magazine. But Ferguson was also known locally for working as a DJ, producer, manager and record store owner. Samuel Ferguson, 47, nicknamed "P-Man Sam," was driving a maroon 2001 Chevrolet Impala north on the highway in Davie on Friday afternoon when someone fired several bullets at him, and he crashed into a concrete divider. The shooter or shooters may have been in a black, four-door car that had clear taillights and was carrying several passengers, said Davie police Maj. Craig Richards. Ferguson lived with his fiancée, Algeetha Lashay Howard, 36, and their two children in Opa-locka. Howard said Ferguson was on the way to pick up her daughter, Destiny Frazier, and take her to work at Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise when he was killed. Ferguson was due later at Memorial West Hospital in Pembroke Pines to visit his sister, Cheryl Webb, a dialysis patient. Ferguson, aka P-Man Sam, hit the headlines a year ago when he wrote a piece for Hip-Hop Weekly about old friend Ross, revealing the rapper once worked at a prison. Ross initially denied the story, but he opened up to Ferguson, a former convict, for Don Diva's October 2008 issue, and came clean. Afterwards, Ross was said to be unhappy with the article and began a nasty feud with the writer. Ross recently stated, "Ferguson is a liar, hes an informant, hes a rat, hes a b***h... This s**t (is) about to get deeper than rap." Don Diva's Editor-in-Chief, Tiffany Chiles, admits she is "deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless incident." BOW WOW SIGNS WITH CASH MONEY Bow Wow has officially announced joining forces with Bryan "Baby" Williams and Lil Wayne as Cash Money/Young Money's newly signed artist. "We had two sit-downs," Bow Wow said of meeting with Cash Money. "Upon the first sit-down, I called [co-CEO Birdman] and told him what I wanted to do. So it was a no-brainer. He was like, 'Bow, you always been family. Next to Wayne, I look at you like my son. If you not with JD, you with us.' From there, it was a done deal. So I wanna thank [him], Slim and Wayne." Bow Wow's addition to the Cash Money collective follows the announcement that Omarion had inked with Lil Wayne's Young Money imprint. "We all want to win, and in order to do that, we have to cover all bases," Bow said. "With me coming to Cash Money, I bring something to the table that hasn't been there in their history. C-MURDER SENTENCED TO LIFE. Corey "C-Murder'' Miller was sentenced to life in prison this morning ( Friday August 14) for killing an Avondale teenager at a Harvey nightclub in 2002. This week, a jury found Miller, 38, guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Steve Thomas, 16, during a brawl on Jan. 12, 2002 at the now closed Platinum Club in Harvey. After Judge Hans Liljeberg of the 24th Judicial District Court denied a request from Miller's attorney, Ron Rakosky, for a new trial, the judge heard emotional testimony from Thomas's mother, Dolores Thomas. "Today is not a happy day,'' she said. "It's only a day of relief because there's nothing we can do to bring my baby back.'' Although it has been seven years since Steve's death, Dolores Thomas said that the pain is still great. "We still cry everyday for our baby,'' she said. "We never got to see him graduate, go to prom, get married. We won't have a grandchild to love.'' The victim's father, George Thomas, spoke to Miller's family. "Y'all can see him. Y'all can talk to him. What do we have? All we can look at are photos," George Thomas said. Liljeberg sentenced Miller to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The judge then spoke to Thomas's family, saying "I'm sincerely sorry for your loss.'' Rakosky, who had said that he had not been paid by Miller, said that he would file a motion to withdraw as the rapper's attorney and would not serve as appellate counsel. Liljeberg granted Rakosky's request and told Miller that he will appont public defender until Miller can find money to get his own lawyer. The rapper said that he will be getting one to appeal. Miller, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, was then led out of the courtroom in handcuffs and leg shackles. After the hearing, Miller's aunt, Marie Miller, said that the family is optimistic about the rapper's future. "I know everything's going to work out,'' she said."The family is holding out pretty well because we know that this is going to a higher level.'' Before the hearing began, Miller was surrounded by four deputies in the jury box. Another 12 officers were also stationed in the courtroom. Miller's conviction this week was the second time that a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder. A jury convicted him in 2003, but the presiding judge at the time, Martha Sassone, awarded Miller a new trial, in finding that prosecutors withheld the background information on three of its witnesses from the defense. The state Supreme Court upheld the decision in March 2006, clearing the way for a second trial. "I Gotta Feeling" holds at #1 for 7 weeks and "Boom Boom Pow" spent 12 weeks at #1. This is the longest consecutive stay by a duo or group in the Billboard charts 51 year history. The Black Eyed Peas bypassed Boyz II Men's 1994 record for successive stay at the top by a duo or group when they hit 17 weeks at #1. The Black Eyed Peas are also the first duo or group with consecutive #1's on the Mainstream Top 40 chart since Maroon 5 in 2004. "I Gotta Feeling," the second single from The E.N.D., sits at #1 on the Top 40 chart. Since its release seven weeks ago, "I Gotta Feeling" has sold over 1.95 million digital downloads. Their first single "Boom Boom Pow" spent 6 weeks at #1 on the Top 40 chart and has sold over 3.8 million digital downloads. A new alliance between Dr. Dre, Interscope CEO Jimmy Iovine, and computer maker Hewlett-Packard aims to save the quality of digital music. No, this is not an attempt to fix the record industry's business woes. The goal is to lift the sound quality of the too-often tinny tunes squeaking out of our ear buds, and it's an ambitious plan nonetheless. HP will release premium-priced laptops, headsets, and software featuring the "Beats by Dr. Dre" brand sometime this fall, music industry sources with knowledge of the offering told CNET News. In an interview last week, Iovine declined to discuss HP or any other company that may be involved. He confirmed, however, that he and Dr. Dre are part of a plan to reconstruct the entire "digital music ecosystem" from the sound file to the computer and culminating with high-end headsets. Iovine downplayed the potential for the group's efforts to compete with Apple. The man who discovered rapper Eminem, said he enjoys an excellent relationship with Apple CEO Steve Jobs. In addition, the partnership would love to join forces with Apple and other consumer electronics companies, according to a source close to the company. That said the plan has all the markings of an attempt to lure away those Apple fans who possess a discerning ear. Audiophiles have long lamented the dropoff in sound quality brought on by the onset of digital music. "We have to fix the entire chain," Iovine told CNET News. "Our position is to go to all the sources and try to improve sound and educate people...We can't put anything weak in the line. Whoever puts out things that sound bad shouldn't be as cool as something that sounds great." Iovine said that he and Dr. Dre's efforts are not based on any attempt to save the music industry. "I just want our product to sound better," Iovine said. "The record business committed many, many mistakes in the last 10 years, and I'm right in there. One of them was letting its product get degraded. It's one thing to let it get stolen, it's another to allow it to be degraded because then you really don't have a chance...video games and TV quality are getting better and the quality of our work is getting lower. If that happens, then music will become disposable. That's something we can fix." 50 TO PERFORM AT SIX FLAGS. "I can think of no better way to do this than to help improve the lives of the young people that reside there through programs created by my foundation." 50 Cent will perform live as part of Six Flags Great Adventure's Summer Concert Series. Tickets for the concert are available at sixflags.com and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the foundation in an effort to establish academic programs in the region. SHYNE A FREE MAN IN OCTOBER. On Tuesday (August 4), a Manhattan judge signed an order that will see former Bad Boy recording artist and onetime Sean "Diddy" Combs protégé Jamal "Shyne" Barrow receive two-and-a-half years of post-release supervision stemming from his 2001 conviction and sentencing in the infamous Club New York case. An attorney for Shyne born Jamal Barrow but now going by Moses Levi after converting to Judaism while in prison said that the order marked one of the last remaining hurdles in the way of his client's release from prison in October. "He's about 90 percent of the way home now," attorney Oscar Michelin told MTV News following the hearing. The district attorney's office had recommended Shyne receive the maximum amount of five years of post-release supervision (essentially probation), due to the violent nature of his crime. In court, Michelin presented a memo he prepared in Shyne's defense, which was a combination of previous law examples that were similar to his client's case, talk of the rapper's good behavior and testimony from scholars and business executives who support the Brooklyn native's release. "I'm grateful," a calm Shyne told the judge. The rapper was hoping to be re-sentenced as a way to avoid post-release supervision, telling the judge that the supervision equates to "extra jail time." It was a strategy he and his lawyer proposed but the judge quickly dismissed, citing a recent court of appeals decision that changed the nature of assigned post-release supervision in New York. As a result of the ruling, a number of previous dependents in cases, including Shyne, have been issued extra supervision following their jail sentences. The judge acknowledged the rules were not in effect when Shyne was initially sentenced, but cases all over the state are now being reexamined as a result of the ruling. In April, Shyne appeared in court for a parole hearing, hoping to be released early after serving eight years in prison but the rapper was denied any lenience. Now the rapper has a mandatory release scheduled for October 6 of this year. The date will mark eight years and seven months served; he began his sentence in April of 2001, when he was 22 years old. Shyne will serve the rest of his sentence at the Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, New York. BEASTIE BOYS' MCA UPDATES FANS ON RECOVERY. Birthday boy Adam "MCA" Yauch of the Beastie Boys (who turned 44 today) surprised fans with an email, giving everyone an update on his recovery process after being recently diagnosed with cancer, and his thoughts on the tributes at last weekend's All Points West festival: "So Im about a week and a half out of surgery now and rapidly recovering from it. i haven't taken any of the pain meds, which supposedly speeds along the healing process, or should I say, taking them slows it down. Anyway, I spent 1 night at the hospital after the surgery. The hospital was too crazy to get any rest so I headed home to relax, have home cooked food and hang out with the family. Im pretty well detoxed from the anesthesia that they pumped me up with to keep me under for all that time. that took several days to get out of my system. My neck and jaw are still pretty stiff from the surgery, but it gets better everyday. had the stitches out this past Monday... so things are moving along. But no sooner am i on the mend from this first torture than are they lining up the next one. The next line of treatment will be radiation. That involves blasting you with some kind of beam for a few minutes a day, 5 days a week, for about 7 weeks. That will start in a few weeks... Saw the Jay-Z cover of "No Sleep [Til Brooklyn]", and the Coldplay one of "Fight For Your Right" from APW on YouTube. Good sh*t. And I heard Karen O wore a "get well MCA" armband, and that Q-Tip gave a shout out too..... very kind of them. Just wanted to thank them and everyone else who sent positive thoughts my way. I do think that all of the well wishes have contributed to the fact that my treatment and recovery are going well. Much love back at all of you! - Adam" FABOLOUS TAKES #1 ON THE CHARTS. With a squad as colorful as its owner, the Raiders captivated large numbers of black and Hispanic fans in L.A. at a time when gang warfare, immigration and the real estate boom were rapidly changing the city. The L.A. Raiders morphed into a worldwide brand as the team's colors, swagger and anti-establishment ethos became linked with "Gangsta Rap" and the hip-hop scene that was permeating South Central Los Angeles. Rapper-turned-filmmaker Ice Cube was not only witness to this evolution; he was also a part of it. As a member of the notorious rap group N.W.A, Ice Cube helped make the silver and black culturally significant to a new generation and demographic. Still a die-hard Raiders fan, Cube will explore the unlikely marriage between the NFL's rebel franchise and America's glamour city, and show how pro football's outlaw team became the toast of La La Land. 30 for 30 will begin airing on October 6 on ESPN. Album is a little soulful," he said, sitting in an L.A. studio recently. "But I think that The R.E.D. Album takes you. ... It's crazy because it could be pre-Documentary, and it could be post-R.E.D. Album, like it's early and late. It's early and late, so it's just on time. If you could understand that. It's like I'm raw. Like [on] some of the songs my flow is as raw as before I got with Dre." WATCH THE VIDEO INTERVIEW DUCK DOWN SIGNS TO BLUE SCHOLORS. There will also be a brand new full-length Blue Scholars album and other projects coming soon. The sales and distribution model developed by the group for their upcoming releases will allow them to maintain complete ownership of their music and total control over how it is marketed, sold, and even given away. Instead of signing a standard artist/record label deal, Blue Scholars hired the label Duck Down to run point on marketing for all of their upcoming releases. As a major player in the current and ever-changing record label industry, Duck Down Records saw this deal as an opportunity to get creative and experiment with strategies for record labels to continue evolving as viable businesses. Dru Ha, CEO of Duck Down Records states, I believe Blue Scholars is positioned to be one of the next important groups, not just in hip hop, but in music worldwide, and I want Duck Down to be a part of that. They bring their progressive ideas not just to their music and lyrics, but also in the way they think about and do their business. Duck Downs current distribution partner, E1 Entertainment, the largest independent distributor in the United States, will handle distribution of Blue Scholars physical product. Digital sales and distribution will go through Tunecore. Direct-to-fan marketing and sales will be developed by the members of Blue Scholars themselves, using Topspin web marketing tools. Says Geo, of Blue Scholars, After weighing all the options, remaining independent is without question, the best look. Duck Down shares that vision and their track record speaks for itself. With them, we get that national and international push while still owning and controlling our music. " To finance all the upcoming projects, Blue Scholars have formed a strategic brand relationship with Seattle independent coffee company, Caffe Vita. The coffee company will also play a role in the sales and distribution plan by selling upcoming albums in all of their retail outlets and marketing the releases via their online presence. Blue Scholars DJ/ Producer Sabzi says in regard to their partnership with Caffe Vita - their innovative marketing, their justice and equity in business practices, and their premiere quality of product and presentation, make Caffe Vita an ideal brand to partner with. I intend to do with our music what Vita does with their coffee. "Coffee is both International and local, it effects the lives of millions, and it has tremendous ability to generate culture. We believe strongly in the work of the Blue Scholars and their power to look beyond the basic commodity that music has become. We are honored that Sabzi and Geo see that Vita is striving for the same goals." Mike McConnell, founder Caffe Vita Blue Scholars have sold over 60,000 albums and played over 400 live shows. Vernon Forrest, a former three-time champion who gained stardom when he became the first boxer to defeat "Sugar" Shane Mosley, was shot to death during an apparent robbery in Atlanta, police said Sunday. According to the Associated Press, Sgt. Lisa Keyes said that Forrest, 38, was shot several times in the back Saturday night, which an autopsy confirmed. Keyes said there are no suspects. "Vernon was one of the few decent people in boxing," promoter Gary Shaw said. "I mean really decent. He cared about mentally challenged adults. He cared about kids. I just can't believe it." Fulton County medical examiner Michele Stauffenberg confirmed the case was a homicide and that the autopsy showed Forrest died from "multiple gunshot wounds involving the torso and thigh." Keyes said a police report on the shooting was not immediately available. Forrest, a native of Augusta, Ga., who lived in Atlanta, was a member of the 1992 Olympic team. He also was a former IBF welterweight and two-time WBC junior middleweight champion with a 41-3 career record with 29 knockouts. "He was one of the most gracious and charitable fighters in boxing and he will be missed by the entire boxing community and all of his friends at HBO," HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg told The Associated Press. Greenburg helped put on eight of Forrest's fights. "Maybe Vernon's lasting legacy will be for Americans everywhere to rise up and end this kind of senseless violence," Greenburg said. Those who knew the fighter praised his role in launching the Destiny's Child group homes in Atlanta, which work to provide homes for the mentally disabled. "It was truly his calling," Forrest's publicist, Kelly Swanson, said of his work with children. "When he wasn't boxing, this was his full-time job. "When they would see him, they would just light up, and some of them couldn't even talk. Vernon was very much involved. He'd have some of the kids over to his house on Sundays. They were part of his family." Swanson said Forrest was not married and has one son, Vernon Jr. Forrest is the third prominent boxer to die this month. Former two-time champion Arturo Gatti, who retired in 2007, was found dead July 11 at a Brazilian resort. Gatti's wife, Amanda Rodrigues, is being held as the prime suspect. Another former champion, Alexis Arguello, was found dead on July 1 at his home in Managua, Nicaragua. He was elected mayor of Nicaragua's capital last year. JAY Z REPLACES BEASTIE BOYS. SIX PEOPLE SHOT AND WOUNDED AT TRAE DAY EVENT Six people were shot and wounded at the second annual 'Trae Day' celebration yesterday (July 22). University spokeswoman Eva Pickens said university officials were told that the shootings, which occurred at about 8:30 p.m. at Cleburne and Tierwester, near the East Garage, were gang-related. According to The Houston Chronicle, at least one of the people shot attended TSU, she said, adding that none of the injuries were life-threatening. The student was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center. His name was not available Wednesday night. Five others were taken to Ben Taub General Hospital. Pickens said university police, who are investigating, reported that the shooting involved a Missouri City-Fresno gang rivalry. Angela Anderson, another spokeswoman, declined to elaborate about how the TSU officers came to that conclusion. "Its an ongoing investigation," she said late Wednesday. Peter Role, a local music promoter who was at the event, said he heard what he said sounded "like the Fourth of July" in the parking lot. "We heard some gunshots and everybody was hitting the ground," he said. He doesnt know exactly what happened, but apparently a round hit a tire of his Lexus. TSU police removed the tire for inspection. He called the shooting "an unfortunate incident. This is an isolated incident, hopefully it wont happen again." Tangela DeBoest, who was visiting her mother at a nearby apartment complex, said she saw a car drive onto Tierwester from Alabama and open fire into the crowd. Promotional materials advertised the event as a free family block party in celebration of the second "Trae Day," featuring live performances, train rides, pony rides, face painting and moonwalks as well as testing for HIV and sexually transmitted diseases and free school supplies. The event followed a similar event last year meant to celebrate the work of rapper Frazier Thompson III better known by stage name Trae with at-risk youth in Houston. Thompson was officially honored by the City Council for that work on July 22, 2008, which they proclaimed "Trae Day." The event was scheduled for 3-9 p.m., in the parking lot of the TSU stadium. The rapper was scheduled to be joined by U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and City Council members Peter Brown and Ron Green, as well as numerous music and sports celebrities, including former Houston Rocket Ron Artest and free agent guard Von Wafer. Nancy Byron, Traes publicist, said the rapper and his entourage had already left the event at 8:30 or 8:45 p.m. and did not see the shooting. "Honestly were hearing so many different accounts, none of us are really sure what happened," Byron said. "We heard some people got hurt. Were very depressed about it and we feel like its a black eye on an otherwise very community-driven event." Byron said the shooting did not have anything to do with Trae or anyone affiliated with him. "This is something that happened with random people who attended the event," she said. Brown was at the event earlier in the day. "My prayers are with the victims of tonights tragic events and their families," Brown said in a statement. NAS BREAKS DOWN THE AUTO-TUNE 10 YRS FROM NOW. Or remember when everybody used to do cuts in their choruses? Or use this kind of sample or use that kind of drum machine? Its just another moment in music. He continued, Everything comes to an end and goes to a new phase, Nas said. So records like D.O.A. have to be made right now. Thats why I did Hip Hop Is Dead. These records have to be made. Its rappers making records that resemble what the real rap sounds like to shake up all this other (stuff). When asked how his drama with Kelis would affect his new record, Nasty Nas had this say, You know what its funny, I never know if (personal drama) is gonna influence the music until Im making it. The record Im working on now has a focus; its me and Damian (Marley) and we have our focus and we already started working on for a few months now. So I have no idea. Its interesting though. Im interested to see it myself, you know? DIDDY LOOKING FOR BACKUP BAND. CHRIS BROWN AND "THE APOLOGY"-- You be the judge. WATCH HERE BEASTIE BOYS TOUR DATES CANCELLED. MEMBER DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER. In a prepared statement for Rapindustry.com Emi released the following: Adam "MCA" Yauch of Beastie Boys was diagnosed last week as having a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. Luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such is considered very treatable. It will however require surgery and several weeks of additional treatment. Fortunately the cancer is not in a location that will affect Yauch's vocal chords. Beastie Boys have canceled all upcoming concert appearances to allow time for Yauch's surgery and recovery. The release of the band's forthcoming album Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 will also be pushed back. Yauch said, "I just need to take a little time to get this in check, and then we'll release the record and play some shows. It's a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because I was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later." A statement from EMI reads: Our thoughts, love and prayers are with Adam Yauch, his family and the Beastie Boys. The most important thing is to allow Adam to focus on staying healthy. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery. SONY CLOSE TO SECURING MJ FILM DEAL. Sony Pictures is close to securing a deal to make a feature film on Michael Jackson's last 80 hours of rehearsal footage. The studio is expected to pay upwards of $50 million for worldwide rights to AEG Entertainment, which owns the footage and showed it to studios last week. The film will feature at least three videos, including an alternative version of Jackson's "Thriller," which were shot to be interstitial programming during the London concerts. The footage was meant to play in 3-D, but it's unclear as yet whether the feature film will present it that way. "High School Musical" director Kenny Ortega, who shot the rehearsal footage, is expected to direct the feature, and sources said he's already beginning to put together the footage so Sony can release the film before year's end. Ortega has the time, as he won't begin directing the Paramount remake of "Footloose" until next March, when star Chace Crawford is on hiatus from "Gossip Girl." Several studios were impressed when shown the footage by AEG last week. Fox, Universal, Paramount and Relativity likely would have met AEG's asking price but knew that Sony Pictures had clear first position because sibling company Sony Music Entertainment owns music publishing rights to Jackson's songs. AEG is also selling TV and video rights to the Aug. 29 tribute concert scheduled in London on Jackson's birthday. Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson and others will perform the song list that Jackson planned, accompanied by the band that rehearsed with the late singer. Source: Variety. BIG BOI HEADED TO DEF JAM? A jailed friend of C-Murder has come forward claiming that he was the one who killed the teenager that C- Murder is accused of shooting. His retrial on the murder charge begins next month and he faces life in prison if convicted. According to reports, C- Murder's lawyer Ron Rakosky claims that the rapper's friend Juan Flowers has stated under oath that he is the one who shot and killed Thomas. Flowers is currenly serving a life sentence in Georgia for a 2007 murder. Rakosky wants Flowers transported to New Orleans to testify in C- Murder's upcoming trial. Currently, Corey C-Murder Miller is serving a 10 year sentence on a separate attempted second-degree murder conviction. In that case, club surveillance video shows the rapper attempting to shoot a club owner and bouncer after exchanging heated words over search regulations. MJ DOMINATES CHARTS AFTER 3 WEEKS. Billboard reports show The King of Pop dominated the Nielsen SoundScan and Billboard charts yet again. Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, Michael Jacksons catalog of solo albums sold 1.1 million copies in the U.S. in the tracking week that ended at the close of business on Sunday (July 12). Thats a jump of 37% stacked next to the previous week, when his combined albums sold were 800,000. In just the past two and a half weeks, American consumers have purchased more than 2.3 million MJ albums. Jacksons Number Ones collection is the top selling album on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart for the third week in a row in the United States, with 349,000 copies sold (an increase of 3%). His Thriller moved 264,000 (up 41%) while Essential powered through another 149,000 (up 18%). Some older Jackson titles also saw great gains, likely owed to the one-two punch of re-stocking by brick-and-mortar retailers and the publicity generated by the memorial service. Off the Wall sold 107,000 (up 108%), Bad did 97,000 (up 332%) and Dangerous blew through 67,000 (up 157%). In turn, Jackson is still the King of the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. It tallies albums that are more than 18 months old, have fallen below #100 on the Billboard 200 and dont have a current radio single. Catalog albums are ineligible to appear on the Billboard 200 chart though they can chart on the Top Comprehensive Albums chart. Jacksons digital track sales totaled 2.5 million in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, according to Nielsen SoundScan. MAXWELL #1 ON BILLBOARD TOP 200. Nipsey Hussle recently told XXL Mag about his upcoming role in the new Ving Rhames film, Wrath of Cain. Produced by Rhames, the movie centers around two brothers from opposing gangs who are at war with one another. The veteran actor specifically drafted Nipsey, a first-time actor, for his role in the picture. The homie Ving Rhames is real tight with my manager Big U, he said, explaining how he got involved in the flick. He had reached out to him sayin he needed to get me in his new movie that he was shooting. As soon as I heard what the movie was about I could relate to it and knew I wanted to be a part of it. Not because it was about gang banging but because of what the story line and plot represented which was a Blood and Crip that turned out to be brothers and wound up fuckin with each other because of the trials and tribulations they went through in the streets. Gillie da Kid also stars in the flick playing Nips brother. The film was shot throughout the young MCs hometown of Los Angeles and the Cybil Brand Prison. It is set for a 2010 release. MJ'S ESTATE OPEN FOR BUSINESS. Two weeks after Michael Jackson's death, administrators of his estate are temporarily authorized to reopen for business and negotiate, among other things, agreements relating to the singer's ill-fated "This Is It" concert tour. While fans in London on Monday lit candles and placed flowers outside the O2 Arena where the entertainer was due to begin his run of 50 concerts, lawyers were in a Los Angeles Superior Court ironing out details of the powers given to two men named by Jackson to administer his estate. Billboard reports that Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff conferred wide-ranging authority on attorney John Branca and recording executive John McClain, at least until Aug. 3 when another hearing is scheduled. The list of powers for the administrators includes taking control of all of Jackson's physical assets and placing them in secure storage facilities; hiring people with expertise in handling various aspects of the estate with fees subject to court approval; and handling tax matters. The judge also authorized Branca and McClain to negotiate with AEG, the producers of the concert, for the benefit of the estate. Attorney Paul Gordon Hoffman, a member of the team representing Branca and McClain, said a quick court order was needed so the two men could "begin to take the actions necessary to preserve the assets of the estate and address the needs" of Jackson's three children. Meanwhile, papers filed in court showed Jackson's mother, Katherine, is seeking a stronger role in her late son's affairs. Hoffman said in a nine-page declaration that as late as 4:10 p.m. Sunday, an attorney for the Jackson family sent an e-mail "stating that it was his intent to have the order reflect that Katherine Jackson should be treated like a third trustee." Hoffman argued that to gain that power, attorneys for Katherine Jackson would need to appear and submit a competing proposed order. No such order was submitted. The judge signed the papers without hearing further argument. GAME TAKES MORE SHOTS AT HOV. The Game took more shots at Jay Z over the weekend: He dropped a new joint LISTEN HERE. "You got cheese and I kill rats," Game raps. He then says: "Do something with that/ Or respond to this/ With them big-ass lips, you got my name in your mouth ..." then says more, referencing Beyoncé and Drake, and then lobs a missile at Kanye West's girlfriend. "Yes my n---a, so, I'm gonna give him some advice/ Get rid of Amber Rose/ I'mma tell you how she get down/ I was at Diddy's afterparty/ Sippin' Cris, she was whispering at Chris Brown/ I seen Chris turn his head like, 'No'/ Then 'Gold Digger' came on, I pointed like, 'Ho!' J.MONEY 1ST NAME LAST NAME GETS NAME CHANGE AND SINGLE #1 MOST ADDED. Bases Loaded Records/Universal Republic is pleased to announce that J. FUTURISTIC's debut single, "1st Name Last Name," is the #1 MOST ADDED single at Urban Radio (Nielson Mediabase and R&R Urban). This is an incredible feat for a rapper that only decided to rap a little over a year and a half ago and is perfect timing to announce his name change from J. Money 1st Name Last Name to J. Futuristic. "I've been going by the name J. Money for as long as I can remember. My first name is Jermaine and I made a lot of money in the streets so people around my way would call me J. Money. When I got deep in the industry we found out there was another J. Money rapping so contractually I had to change my name up. It's all good because I'm here to catapult the futuristic movement so J. Futuristic suits me just fine," states J. Futuristic. J. FUTURISTIC is set to deliver his debut album, J. NEUTRON, to the masses this fall and has already been heralded in his hometown of Atlanta as one to watch. "1st NAME, LAST NAME" stayed at the top of V103's Greg Street's Top 8 at 8 for months, and J. Futuristic has teamed up with some of Atlanta's and the nations top rappers for a number of hit records including Gucci Mane, Shawty Lo, Young Jeezy and more. J. FUTURISTIC was introduced to the world in 2008 when he first appeared on Hoodrich 9 Radio Mixtape with Shawty Lo on the hit single, "Trapper of the Year." Shortly there after he was featured on the Trapper of the Year Mixtape that gave us our first listen to "1st NAME, LAST NAME," J. FUTURISTIC's music and fresh style was born from his past. Raised by a single mom, at 14 he ventured into the world and received an education in the streets. "I would wake up every morning and find a house to break in. I did not know how to steal the cars, but I was breaking into them as well," he remembers. A year later, J was arrested and sent to boot camp in South Georgia. He was released after serving ninety (90) days, but ended up back at the same camp four months later. Until he did his last bid of four (4) years he lead a life in and out of jail. At that point he decided going to prison was no longer the road he wanted to travel down. It was time to turn it around - hence the futuristic movement. "Being futuristic is all about me taking a positive spin on my life and my journey to teach others that even though a lot of negative things may be or have been a part of your life it's never to late to turn it around. I figured that I'm from the streets and people from the streets would relate to me trying to show them a different way. It also means to be you and have a good time. We can all set new trends and be futuristic if we just believe in ourselves," exclaims J. Futuristic. "I'm with this ace of spades and I'ma tell you like this, it's what I got to say..And how I'm coming out today..F*ck Jay-Z...This is a Black Wall Street party, f*ck Jay-Z. F*ck Jay-Z. F*ck Jay-Z. F*ck Jay-Z. F*ck Jay-Z! F*ck Jay-Z! Old a** n*gga. Old a** n*gga. Old a** n*gga. Old a*ss n*gga. Old a** n*gga. All this talk about autotune sh*t, somebody tell Hova to get off his honor's d*ck...F*ck Jay-Z! F*ck Jay-Z!" YAYO REACTS TO GAME'S APOLOGY. In a recent interview on 50 Cent's site, Tony Yayo reacts to the recent apology from The Game."Honestly, it was bugged out to me when n*gga said Yayo, Lloyd Banks," Yayo told DJ Whoo Kid. Kelly released the following statement in response to an inaccurate Internet report about a supposed police search of his house in the Chicago suburb of Olympia Fields. "A wildly exaggerated and inaccurate report has been circulating on the Internet that Olympia Fields police showed up at R. Kelly's house with a search warrant just before the singer left for his three-week concert tour in Africa last month and then searched the place looking for a missing 17-year-old girl. "This is completely false. No police ever showed up at Kelly's house with a search warrant nor was his house ever searched. It is also not true, as the unsubstantiated report claimed, that any such girl ever stayed overnight in Kelly's house or that she had been there but left shortly before some mythical police search. "Kelly's attorneys have informed the police that they will cooperate fully with any investigation." QUEEN'S BOROUGH NAMES STREET AFTER JMJ. The corner of 205th Street and Hollis in Queens will be renamed "Run-D.M.C. JMJ Way" after Hip-Hop group Run DMC and the group's legendary DJ, Jam Master Jay who was murdered in a Queens recording studio on October 30, 2002. All three members of the group hail from the Hollis neighborhood. Queens Democrat Councilman Leroy G. Comrie, representative of the area, supported the naming of the street, and even highlighted Darryl McDaniel's (DMC) donation of memorabilia for the possible Hollis Hip-Hop Museum. In a statement to the New York Times Comrie said, "It is my sincere hope that this street renaming, combined with the museum, will help to economically revitalize this particular neighborhood as a potential tourism attraction." On April 4, 2009, Run DMC became just the second Hip-Hop group to be inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, after Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. Billboard reports show Three Michael Jackson albums sold about 100,000 copies apiece in the first days following his death Thursday. Michael Jackson sales dominated the Catalog Album Chart by taking 8 of the Top 10 positions. The King of Pop's Number Ones leads the pack at #1 with 108,000 sold, while The Essential Michael Jackson is #2 with 102,000 and Thriller is #3 with 101,000, according to Nielsen data that was released today. Catalog albums defined by Billboard as being albums that are more than 18 months old are ineligible to appear on the Top 200 albums chart. However, they can chart on the all-encompassing Top Comprehensive Albums list, where Jackson is holding the top three positions, followed by The E.N.D. at #4. Jackson's Off The Wall is also #15 on the Comprehensive chart with 33,000 sold, and Bad is #27 with 17,000. As for digital songs, in the past week Nielsen SoundScan processed nearly 2.95 million MJ digital track sales across North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. This is compared to 52,000 track sales in the previous week, before his death. The Top 5 MJ digital songs were: "Thriller" with 221,000 downloads, "Man In The Mirror" with 216,000, "Billie Jean" with 211,000, "Beat It" with 172,000 and "The Way You Make Me Feel" with 159,000. In the U.S. alone, there were more than 2 million MJ digital track sales in one week - that is more than all of his digital sales in 2007 and 80 percent of his digital sales in 2008. Nine of his songs were downloaded more than 100,000 times each and 16 songs were downloaded more than 50,000 times. Since SoundScan began tracking digital sales in 2004, no artist has sold more than 1 million tracks in one week until now. On the Bilboard 200, the Black Eyed Peas "The E.N.D.", took the #1 slot, selling 88,000 copies. After three weeks on the charts, they have officially gone gold (540,000 total). Eminem takes #5 selling 47,200 units of his Relapse album (1,168, 800 total). Ginuwine debuted A Mans Thoughts taking the #9 slot selling 37,300 copies. JAY-Z CLARIFIES SONY/ATLANTIC DEAL. After it was reported in May that Jay-Z may be signing record deals with both Sony Music and Atlantic Records, Jay has set the record straight. He did ink a distribution deal with Sony for his Roc Nation label, but he also signed a one-off deal with Atlantic to release his next album, The Blueprint 3, which is due on September 11. "That's pretty much just for this specific album. Roc Nation -- we're experts in marketing and making records. But we do distribution deals," Jay told Billboard. "On this one, we're working directly with the Atlantic staff, which is Julie Greenwald, Lyor Cohen, Kevin Liles and Kyse Mike Kyser. For the rest of the Roc Nation artists, we did a distribution deal with Sony." VIBE MAGAZINE SHUTS DOWN. Music mag Vibe is folding, according to internal memos issued to the staff on Tuesday by editor in chief Danyel Smith and Steve Aaron, former CEO of the Vibe Media Group. "It is with great sadness, and with heads held high, that we leave the building today," wrote Smith. "We were assigning and editing a Michael Jackson tribute issue when we got the news. It's a tragic week overall, but as the doors of the Vibe Media Group close, on the eve of the magazine's 16th anniversary, it's a sad day for music, for hip hop in particular, and for the millions of readers and users who have loved and continue to love the Vibe brand." Quincy Jones, the producer behind Jackson's best-selling LPs "Off the Wall" and "Thriller," founded the magazine with Time Warner in 1992. Like other music publications that have closed shop recently -- a list that includes Blender, Radio and Records and Performing Songwriter -- Vibe suffered from a steep drop in print advertising, having announced in February that it would cut its rate base from 800,000 to 600,000. In his memo, Aaron also cited the lack of investments sources need to keep the enterprise afloat. "The deal market right now remains very poor and at the end of the day, the lack of investment resources to restructure the huge debt load on our small company has made this outcome a reality," he wrote. USHER - Usher, who was significantly influenced by Jackson, added, "It's pretty hard right now, man. Michael Jackson transcended culture. He transcended love, man. He changed the barrier of life and the way we looked at things." CIARA- "He was part of the reason why for me," she said. "Whenever someone asks me who inspires me to do what I do, I always say Michael. That's it for me. He's everything to me. He's really a part of the reason why. KOBE BRYANT- "I think it's probably deeper than people would expect, actually," Kobe Bryant said. "Being out here in L.A., I had numerous conversations, just over the phone and also at his house, just talking about work ethic and paying attention to details. He was extremely inspirational for me because he helped me understand that it's OK to be different. And when I say different I mean different in the sense of being obsessed with your craft ... and working your tail off and being consumed by what you do. He helped mentor me in that department. I think we lost an absolutely brilliant, brilliant mind and just a genuine nice person." EARVIN "MAGIC" JOHNSON - "I will always cherish the friendship with Michael Jackson and the Jackson Family. I remember the first time Michael called me and asked if I would be in his 'Remember The Time' video. That was the greatest thrill of my life. The second greatest thrill was going out on tour three times with The Jacksons. I am extremely saddened by Michael's sudden death. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Jackson family and his children. "I grew up idolizing him and listening to his music. I was looking forward to seeing Michael back on stage in London this summer. Now, I will hold on to the great memories and the great music he leaves behind. He is by far the greatest entertainer of all time. He will truly be missed." The Man Who Discovered Michael Jackson (Known Entertainment Executive Ben Brown), Issued a Statement Regarding Michael's Recent Passing. - I was deeply saddened to hear the reports of the passing of my friend, the 'King of Pop.' My prayers, thoughts, and best wishes go out to Michael's family, friends, and fans around the world," Ben Brown said today, according to Super Gold International. Brown went on to say, "Michael, a giant in the music and entertainment world, I feel, will continue to impact the world of entertainment and the world itself through his creative works. He will be missed." Fat Joe called in to MTV to remember the effect that Jackson's music had on him in his youth. "This is probably among the top three worst days of my life. MJ you know I'm a gangsta rapper so we always got that hard edge, but at the end of the day, the king is the king. "I can go down the list: there wouldn't be no Usher, there wouldn't be no Chris Brown. There wouldn't be nobody without MJ. There wouldn't be no Justin. He was just harmony on Earth. I never think MJ ever did anything wrong in his life. He was just a beautiful soul on this earth." Rev Run and Snoop Dogg both called in to the show and recalled Jackson's strong sense of pride in his career and with his fans. "The thing that went through my mind was that he lived so big. He just worked it so hard. He was such a big imagination. He danced, he sang, he pushed so hard to entertain us," Rev said. "He was so driven that it was really amazing. I think the best thing that Michael will leave is his ability to captivate people. He captivated us." Snoop Dogg added, "I feel like his music will never die and his spirit will never die, because he influenced so many if us. He gave us a lot of hope that we feel like we can be big. He was very inspiring and up close and personal with his fans. That to me was special. That's one of the things that I loved about Mike. When I got a chance to meet him, that's the feeling and spirit that I got from him." Juelz Santana spoke to MTV News, still in disbelief. "This is ... damn!" he said. "Wow! Unexpected. A shock. A low blow. All that right there." The Diplomat member said he woke up around 4:45 p.m. to the news of the icon's death. "I'm getting myself together, walking in the living room [when] they said Mike died," Santana recalled. "It was breaking news at 5. I put it up on Twitter and people were saying his death was still pending. I couldn't believe it. ... I just woke up and they said, 'Mike is dead.' The first thought in your mind is, 'That's Michael Jackson. He can't be dead.' That just shows you everybody is human, nobody is immune to nothing especially death." LIL WAYNE: "I personally can't believe it," Lil Wayne told MTV News. "But it's more unfortunate for the world of music. ... My love goes out to his family. ... A sad day in history, not [just] music." CHRIS BROWN: Michael Jackson is the reason why I do music and why I am an entertainer," Brown said in a statement. He's the greatest ... the best ever. No one will ever be better." USHER: "This loss has deeply saddened me!" Usher told MTV News on Thursday night (June 25). "It is with a heavy heart I composed this statement. May God cover you, Michael. We all lift your name up in prayer. I pray for the entire Jackson family, particularly Michael's mother, children and all his fans that loved him so much. I would not be the artist, performer and philanthropist I am today without the influence of Michael. I have great admiration and respect for him, and I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to meet and perform with such a great entertainer, who in so many ways transcended the culture. He broke barriers, he changed radio formats! With music, he made it possible for people like Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama to impact the mainstream world. His legacy is unparalleled. Michael Jackson will never be forgotten." BEYONCE: "This is such a tragic loss and a terrible day," Beyoncé added. "The incomparable Michael Jackson has made a bigger impact on music than any other artist in the history of music. He was magic. He was what we all strive to be. He will always be the King of Pop! Life is not about how many breaths you take, but about how many moments in life that take your breath away. For anyone who has ever seen, felt or heard his art, we are all honored to have been alive in this generation to experience the magic of Michael Jackson. I love you, Michael." Irv Gotti described Jackson as "the biggest star of our generation," which is tough to dispute. "The Best Entertainer!" Gotti beamed of Jackson. "He made the best records, videos, everything. I'm saddened by the world's loss. For a brief time he considered working with me and having me produce his album. In that brief time, I got to know him fairly well. And he was just the coolest person. My prayers go out to the whole Jackson family and especially his children." TRICK DADDY: "MJ made black folks proud," Trick Daddy testified. "He influenced our music and our style of dress. He taught us what it meant to be a 'performer.' He was our beloved icon, and we'll hold him in our hearts forever. "We've just lost the most loved, talented and famous African-American in the world," the Miami MC continued. "Everyone from the age of 25-80 should be saddened by this loss, and if you're younger and you don't know the history, you need to learn it. Michael paved the way for blacks into the mainstream." Mariah Carey also tweeted, "I am heartbroken. My prayers go out to the Jackson family and my heart goes out to his children. Let us remember him for his unparalleled contribution to the world of music, his generosity of spirit in his quest to heal the world and the joy he brought to his millions of devoted fans throughout the world. I feel blessed to have performed with him several times and to call him my friend. No artist will ever take his place. His star will shine forever." was rushed to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center this afternoon by Los
Angeles Fire Department paramedics. Fire Capt. Steve Ruda said paramedics

Michael Jackson suffered a heart attack at his home in Los Angeles this
afternoon. Reports say that Jackson, 50, went into cardiac arrest and
has been rushed to hospital. TMZ is now claiming that the singer has died,
but this is as yet unconfirmed. Jackson was seen being taken into an ambulance
by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics and moved to the UCLA Medical
Centre, says TMZ. The
Los Angeles Times reported that Jackson was not breathing when paramedics
arrived at his home. Captain Steve Ruda told the LA Times that paramedics

cardiopulmonary resucitation on Jackson and took him to UCLA Medical Center.
Jackson's mother was said to be at the hospital to meet her son. It is
believed a call to 911 was made from Jackson's home in Holmby Hills, LA,
at 12.21pm (8.21pm). A member of the Jackson family told TMZ that 'Michael
is in really bad shape'. An update from TMZ says, 'We just got off the
phone with Joe Jackson, Michael's dad, who says "he is not doing
well".' The singer is due to play 50 sell-out shows at London's O2
Arena starting in July. But the King of Pop has already had to postpone
the first few nights' shows. Organisers AEG Live said this was in order
to make sure everything for the 'massive and technically complex show'
was running smoothly. But critics say ongoing concerns about Jackson's
health are the real reason behind the gigs having to be postponed. Earlier
this year, Jackson was seen emerging from a doctors three times in one

by his representatives. Jackson has not been on tour for over a decade,
but the concerts at the O2 were seen as his final comeback before finally
