BET combines fashion with music on Rip The Runway
Written by: Sam Frank

BET brought sexy back to New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom this week with its Rip The Runway Fashion show, hosted by platinum selling artist Chris Brown and the sultry Ciara. In its third consecutive year, Rip The Runway united today’s hottest stars with the world’s top designers to prove once again that music and fashion go together like Kool-Aid and sugar.

Other celebrities to hit the red carpet included Flavor of Love 2 winner Deelishis, accompanied by her “badonkadonk,” The Wire’s Julito McCullum, Musiq Soulchild, Lloyd, model Melyssa Ford, and BET’s 106 & Park host Terrence J. “Call me Terrence Brown,” exclaimed Terrence J as he spoke to BET cameras with his arm around Chris Brown’s shoulders.

The show began on the red carpet as a variety of artists, guest celebrities, models, fashion designers, and even company CEOs posed for all the media’s strobe-like flashing cameras. Some of the red carpet pedestrians included MTV’s Making The Band choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson, who professed to BET cameras that she thinks “it’s phenomenal BET can do an event like this;” New York rapper Mims (“This is Why I’m Hot”); Alabama rapper Rich Boy and Polo The Don (“Throw Some D’s”); Angela and Vanessa Simmons from Run’s House; Paul Wall, who blinded BET News cameras with his shiny grill while being hugged on by Brooke Hogan of Hogan Knows Best. When asked the whereabouts of her famed father Hogan lightheartedly told reporters that he was “wrestling in Miami.”

Although star power encompassed the red carpet it was the glamour and glitz of the runway that kept the enthusiastic audience cheering. Nike’s Brand Jordan fashion line accentuated models’ curves as Rich Boy and Polo The Don performed “Throw Some D’s” to the backdrop of Jordan imagery. Despite the absence of Jordan, most of the designers were allowed a minute to speak about their clothing lines. Other fashion lines featured were Nelly’s Apple Bottoms, Kimora Lee Simmons’ Baby Phat, 50 Cent’s G-Unit Clothing, The Steve Harvey Collection, plus-size line Monif C, LRG, and a line designed by Project Runway’s Mychael Knight.

Towards the end of the evening Chris Brown performed the hit song “Poppin” as The Andesew fashion line was on display. Andesew, meaning “one soul” in the Ethiopian language of Amharic, was founded by designer Susannah Curtis five years ago. While Andesew graced the runway with elegance Amaya Swimwear’s high end swimsuits demanded all eyes in attendance. Both sides of the stage had shadows of beautiful women dancing behind rice paper walls as Mim’s performance of “That’s Why I’m Hot” put an exclamation point on all the stunning swimsuit models who paraded the catwalk.

BET televised broadcast of Rip The Runway will air on March 14th
