It’s been 10 years since the death of rap legend Tupac Shakur. In the years following the death of this icon, hip-hop culture and music as a whole still remains influenced by ‘Pac. Through various posthumous releases and collabos, the most recent being done by Scarface and Rap-A-Lot Records, his music and presence on this culture are so much felt that people have went as far as to speculated on Tupac still being alive today. Peep “The Lost Episodes” DVD from Dave Chappelle, and you will know what I mean.

Since ’96 rap music has changed in many areas. But the more things change the more they stay the same. The southern rap explosion, dominates the market today, and slang, production-style and sheer swagger is reminiscent of Tupac’s music. 50 cent, Ja Rule, Dmx and many others have borrowed from Tupacs formula for success.

Rap beefs. Tupac and Death Row Records vs. B.I.G. and Bad Boy Records. The saga of the “rap beef” has been popularized on DVDs, mixtapes, even film. Tupac set the standard for the “out-of-control thug” with a message, the “tortured soul” with religious conscious. This is seen in many rap personalities ranging from Dmx to Nas, to countless others who portray the image of a street nigga, thrust into the life of superstardom and the difficulty of balancing the two. We all see the similarities, between what Tupac was doing in ’95 and what is being done today.

Double-Discs. Before “All Eyes on Me” dropped in ’95 this was unheard of for a rap artist. Now it’s the staple of a legend. Jay-Z, B.I.G, Nas, and others have since dropped a double disc to exalt themselves into legendary status.

They say the mark of a legend is the ability to stand the test of time. Tupac’s influence on movies, television, fashion (you don’t have a shirt with Pac’s face on it?) and urban culture is unparalleled. College classes have been formed around his poetry. A center for the creative arts in Atlanta has been opened honoring his life and work as well. Tupac has over 38 million records sold to date.

In the ten-years that have passed since his death, we haven’t really let go of ‘Pac. He is still here, still influencing the young generation. Pac once said in an interview, that he may not change the world, but, he would spark the mind or plant the seed that WILL change the world. Good job, Pac, mission accomplished, rest in peace, soulja…
