INDUSTRY INSIDER-
The Inside Scoop on this week in Hip Hop.

Week of: 4/23-4/27
Written By: Natalie Hinds

This week’s rundown is includes a few new folks that we haven’t heard from in a while as well as our “frequent” visitors whom we love to hear about so much.

NEW NEWS!! Rapper / Actress Eve was arrested early Thursday morning for supposedly driving under the influence after she crashed a Maserati in Hollywood. Her vehicle hit the center curb on Hollywood Boulevard at around 2:45 am. She willingly submitted to blood alcohol testing thereafter. She was taken into custody immediately and later released on a $30,000. Eve is scheduled to return to court on May 17. Well at least she was cooperative unlike the incredible Foxy Brown!

NEW NEWS!! Miami bred rapper Rick Ross is tackling new projects! That’s right he’s currently negotiating with Def Jam in regards to starting a new record label. He told AHH, “Right now I’m working on a lot of different business plans. I got the new album and something coming up with Khaled in a few months….We’re setting the foundation, so be on the lookout.” Also look out for Rick Ross as a co-star in the urban gang thriller, Days of Wrath. The movie also stars rappers, Kurupt, David Banner andSlim Thug.

MONEY NEWS!! Rapper / Actor 50 Cent will lead boxer Floyd Mayweather into the ring on May 5. The rapper bet a whopping $ 1 million that Mayweather will steal the title from reigning champ, Oscar De La Hoya. “It will be great to walk Floyd to the ring for the biggest fight in his career. Fans will get a taste of my new song and then Floyd is going to show the world why he is the best in the business,” said 50. Well you’ve got a lot riding on his victory 50, so may the best man win! The De La Hoya vs. Mayweather fight will air live, at 9pm ET / 6pm PT on HBO Pay-Per-View.

NEW NEWS!! Hip Hop Mogul, Russell Simmons is on a new leaf! He released a statement on Monday calling for an elimination of the words: “bitch”, “ho” and “nigger” from the entire recording industry, calling them “misogynistic” and “racially offensive.” However according to Simmons, “There should not be any government regulation or public policy that should ever violate the First Amendment…With freedom of expression however, comes responsibility.” So I’m confused, if you’re going to ban certain words from being used in lyrics, then how can you not violate the First Amendment? The debate of what is used in rap lyrics has been the pinnacle discussion for years especially since Don Imus took it upon himself to say those disparaging
words about those young women. The fact of the matter is this, until the masses ceases to purchase those songs with that “bad lyrical content,” musicians will continue to produce songs that include those degrading words. To have an affect we have to act upon how we feel. Words are nothing without action behind it.

To sum up this week’s recap, do unto other as you would yourself. If you would let your child listen to what’s on the radio today, don’t produce inappropriate music. If you don’t like what you hear, don’t listen to it. Everyone have a great weekend, and be safe! This is ya gurl Miss Hinds and I’m out!
